Advanced Studies

What is it?

The Advanced Studies Program supports our students that are academically ready to attend college while still in high school. The program will assist students in the processes of admission, advising, registration, course selection, major selection and book purchasing. Whether our students are TAMUK or CBC bound, they will have a place to assist them in their endeavors. It is imperative that participants understand the ultimate goal of the Advanced Studies Program is NOT to graduated students with lots of college hours. Our goal is to make sure that students always complete with highest achievement their high school diploma. High School comes first ALWAYS. Students must also understand that extracurricular activities may affect their ability to take on all of the college hours that they would like to take. An examination of students goals is essential to successfully completing high school and college courses

What is required?

In order to become an Advanced Studies member, students must pass all of their EOC tests, Make appropriate SAT/ACT/TSI Scores for admission and placement at a college or university. TSI Scores are key for placement at Texas public colleges and universities. These scores are required for placement in non-remedial courses at any Texas 2 or 4 year college or university. Students must be in good academic standing in their high school courses. Students should have excellent attendance and behavior records and be involved in school activities.

When can I start?

Most students enter the Advanced Studies Program as Juniors: however freshman and sophomore can also take courses. All freshmen are administered the TSI test in the Fall of their Freshman year and once they pass at least one portion of the TSI test they are eligible for one of four courses available for them (ARTS 1301, BCIS 1305, SPCH 1311, PSYC 2301) Math 1314 can become available to them during the spring semester of their sophomore year if they have completed Algebra II. All Freshmen and Sophomores attend CBC unless they have made the required 23 ACT/530 in Math and 480 in EBRW score to attend TAMUK. Once students become Juniors they can choose to transition to TAMUK if they so choose.

How do I get in?

The Advanced Studies Program requires students to meet all required criteria. Academic participation, demonstration of independent learning skills, demonstration of cooperative working skills and the ability to self advocate are a must. Students must understand colleges are governed by their own policies and we cannot change their rules. Below are the requirements students must meet at Santa Gertrudis Academy HS before they will be permitted to take college courses.

How do I Pay for classes?

At Santa Gertrudis ISD, we believe that achieving your academic potential is the district's top priority. The school district will pay for tuition, fees and books. The district will pay for classes but will require reimbursement by the end of the semester in which the course taken does not receive a minimum passing grade of 70% or higher or you will not be able to register for the following semester.
